It’s like when you fall in love with someone, but after some time, your love and everything you put into the relationship isn’t enough, and they start believing that you don’t love them or that you aren’t interested in the relationship anymore. Its like saying, yeah ” “if the love that I had for you has vanished, and if the river of tears that I’ve shed isn’t very deep, then I’ve made a mistake.

I believe that there are some people who are able to fall out of love, but rather than confronting the issue and accepting responsibility for their own emotions, they look for someone else to blame and then use that person as an excuse to end their relationship.

After Denver and his then-wife Ann Martell experienced their first separation and came dangerously close to ending their marriage in 1974, Denver wrote this song as a gift for Ann Martell.
