2. Townsend’s “In Christ Alone”

Townend and fellow songwriter (and now good friend) Keith Getty wrote “In Christ Alone” in 2002. Townend says, “The song came about in a strange way.”

I first met Keith in the fall of 2000 at a worship gathering, and we quickly decided to write some songs together.

A couple weeks later, Keith sent over some melody ideas, the first of which was a lovely, haunting melody that I immediately fell in love with and began putting down some lyrical ideas on what I thought should be a timeless subject commensurate with the tune.

Knowing we have a Savior gives us hope and freedom. This song helped strengthen my faith in Jesus and taught me to rely on Him for strength in the face of adversity. It will be uplifting to hear this, and I know it will be to you as well.

The track originally appeared on Martha’s album Say The Name, which was published back in the day. Many fans continue to name “Because of Who You Are” as their favorite Martha Munizzi track. The pastor’s two nominations for the Dove Award in the category of Contemporary Gospel Recorded were all thanks to that song.
